Two conservative groups opposing abortion rightshaveannouncedthey support President-ElectDonald Trump'schoiceof Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to head the Department of Health and Human Servicesafter former Vice President Mike Pence criticized thechoiceover abortion concerns.



Ifthispositionisconfirmed, Kennedywillhavebroadauthority over a number of agencies that could directly affect access to abortionacross the country, including the Food and Drug Administration and theMedicare and MedicaidService Center.



In aFridaypost, Pence criticized Kennedy'schoiceas"the mostabortion-supportingRepublicaninmodernhistoryhasappointedhhssecretary.""



"On behalf of tens of millions of pro-life Americans,werespectfully urge Senate Republicans to reject this nomination and give the American people a leader whorespectsthedignityof life," Pence said in a statementreleasedby the grouppromotingAmerican Freedom,which"deeplyconcernsmillions of pro-life Americans.""



Some of Trump's alliesdismissed Pence'sobjections, arguing thatKennedyhadno reason to believehewouldsupportthe platformlaunchedby Republicans over the summer.Itlargelypostponedthisissue to thestate.



"RFK Jr.is going to serve at the pleasure of the president. And the president hasmadeitvery clear that his policy is that thereisno federal role in abortion,"saidthehead of the American Principles Project.



Schilling'sPoliticalActionCommitteeisthe"onlynationwideparent-family organization"toengageindirectelections on a slate of issues,including opposition to abortion and gender-affirming care,andhesaid theyplantospend11,800milliononthis year'scampaignandwork to support Kennedy's nomination.



He pointed to other areas where Kennedy's "MakingAmericahealthyagain" agenda might find common ground with conservatives,andquestionedadolescentblockers and othertypesof hormone therapy for transgender minors, citing Kennedy's past stance.



"Trump chose himforhisagendato makeAmericahealthyagain. And itisvery clearthatthere aremanyproblems in our country, andRFK Jr.Ithinkhe'stheperfectperson to get tothatbottom," Schilling said.



Another major activist group, Susan B. Anthony ProLife America, alsoexpressedconcernaboutthe Kennedyelection.



"Thereisnodoubtthat we need aPro-life HHSSecretary, and of courseweneedRobert F. Kennedy Jr.We have concerns about this," Marjorie Dannenfelser, the group's president, said in a statement.



But regardless of whotheHhssecretaryis, Dannenfelser also saidhebelievesthe"baselinepolicy" set by Trump's first termwillreturn.



Thoseclose to thePresident-elect's transition saidtheydid notbelievetheissue ofabortionwould poseanyrealhurdle to Kennedy's confirmationandwerenotsurprisedthat Pence washavinganargumentwithKennedy.



During the campaign,Trump expressed support for Kennedy'splatform of"makingAmericahealthyagain"andsuggestedthathebe"obsessedwithhealth" in the new administration.



"Do whatever you wantto do. You just go ahead.Weare workingonagrochemicalsandcreatingwomen's health. Heisveryinterested inwomen's healthand you knowthathereallycan not believe. It's such a passion," Trump said of Kennedy onMay 11. 4.



In a statement, theAmericanUnited for LifeGrouptold CBS News that"RFK Jr.is workingtorectifythemistakesof the Biden/Harris administration."Hesaid he was optimistic about working with the company."



But they alsoseemedto acknowledgethathis views were notentirelyconsistent.
